For First-Time College Website Login
Introduction
This guide will show you how to use your K-12 ChromeOS device to securely log in to college websites such as Webmail or Course Access, enroll in Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and set up the Microsoft Authenticator app.
What Is MFA and Why Use It?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security by asking you to verify your identity using two or more steps, such as a password and a code sent to your phone or email, when logging in. This greatly helps protect your account from unauthorized access. For students, MFA keeps your personal and academic information safer and makes it much less likely that bad actor attempts will succeed.
Step 1: Access Your ChromeOS Device
- Power on your ChromeOS device and log in using your school-provided credentials.
Step 2: Download the Microsoft Authenticator App
- Open the Play Store on your ChromeOS device.
- Search for “Microsoft Authenticator” using the Play Store’s search bar.
(Some devices already have the app displayed by PSRC policy
- Click “Install” to download the app to your device.
- We are done with the Microsoft Authenticator App for now.
Step 3: Visit a College Website to Begin Login
- Open your Chrome browser and visit mfa.robeson.edu.
- Enter your username and password to log in.
Step 4: MFA Enrollment Prompt
- Once logged in, you will be prompted to enroll in MFA using the enrollment wizard.
- When asked to choose an MFA method, select the default option, which is “Microsoft App Authentication.”
There is no need at this time to select any other options at the bottom of this screen.
- Click Next through the wizard.
Step 5: Enroll Using the Microsoft Authenticator App
- Continue through the wizard until you see a QR Code.
- When the QR code option appears, click the button labeled “Can't Scan Image.”
- The screen will display a URL and code.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device.
- Allow push notifications for this app to get the best experience.
- If this is the first time using this app, you might have a few optional settings to select.
Pick what best is for you until you get to the "Secure Your Digital Life" screen. - Select Add work or school account.
- If you pressed skip with the prior initial setup wizard or are returning to the Microsoft Authenticator App you will see the "Ready to add your first account" screen.
You might also have a list of prior accounts you added to this tool. You just need to add the college account at this point. - Click the plus (+) button or Add Account button to add a new account, and then select “Work or School Account.”
- Choose “Scan a QR code” then select “Or enter code manually.”
- Copy and paste the code and URL from your browser into the enrollment wizard in the app.
- After entering the information, proceed by entering the correct PIN number shown on your browser screen.
Step 5: Backup MFA Method
In some cases your tablet or smartphone might be unavailable. i.e. left it home, out of power, etc...
Before you complete your enrollment, you should setup a backup option besides the mobile app.
It is highly recommended you use your office telephone number. If you're a student, select an optional cellphone or home telephone number.
You have the option for a telephone call, personal email, security questions, or SMS text message. Complete this step to ensure you do not get locked out of your account.
*The help desk does have an option to provide you with a one-time-password (OTP) if the two options are unavailable to you at the time you try to login.
This process is lengthy and should only be used as an emergency.
Whatever method you select you'll need to verify the option by entering the PIN that was sent to you as a test or by filling out the questions with answers.
(Optional) Backup MFA Method - EMail
- Near the end of the browser’s enrollment wizard, you will be prompted to set up a backup MFA method.
- If you do not have access to a smartphone, it is recommended for K-12 students to select the “Email” option.
- Use your Public Schools of Robeson County email address as your backup, or a personal email if you prefer. Do not use your college email address, since it requires MFA to access.
- You will receive a PIN by email. Enter this PIN to complete the enrollment process.
Congratulations! You are now enrolled in MFA and ready to safely access your college resources.
Make sure your backup method stays up to date, and never share your credentials or PINs with anyone.
